City Approves Sidewalk Cafes, Valet Parking, Extended Bar Hours and more

A spring and summer of activities and special events lies ahead for Royal Oak, including the Oak Apple Run and Baconfest. City Commission also approves outdoor cafes for Zumba and 526/Tequila Blue.

The Royal Oak City Commission took four hours to work through a long agenda at Monday night’s regular meeting.

Commissioners OK Special Event Permits for Oak Apple Run, Baconfest

A Special Event Permit for the was adopted unanimously. The annual event – which takes place on June 2 in downtown Royal Oak–offers a 10K race, 2 mile run run/walk and a 1/4 mile kids run. The events run on barricaded streets. Organizers anticipate approximately 3,000 people participating in the event and an additional 3,000 spectators.

A Special Event Permit for was adopted unanimously. Organizers requested permission to host an outdoor portion of the June 2 event in the Farmers Market west parking lot. More than 40 area restaurants are participating in the 21 and up bacon celebration. The estimated attendance is approximately 1,200 guests plus 100 participants.

BlackFinn gets nine more bar stools

request to change its plan of operation was adopted—Commissioners Patricia Capello and Peggy Goodwin were nays. The saloon asked to be allowed to open at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays to offer a brunch, increase the seating at the main bar from 21 to 30 and decrease the outdoor seating from 36 to eight.

Zumba and 526/Tequila Blue add outdoor cafes

Commissioners approved outdoor cafes for Zumba Mexican Grille at its new location in the North Main Lofts building and 526/Tequila Blue at 526 S. Main St.

proposal to add an outdoor café within the sidewalk in front of the building was adopted unanimously. The cafe will be approximately 34-foot by 16-foot and have eight tables with seating for 24 people.

Gemmayze to offer valet parking

A valet parking request for was adopted unanimously. Pick-up and drop-off stations for the restaurant located at 310 S. Main St. will consist of two metered parking spaces in front of the building at 117 W. Third St.
