Planning Commission Puts Shopping Center, Temporary Fireworks Display on Hold

Panel gives some proposals more time, OKs requests for fitness center, restaurant expansion.

Tuesday's Planning Commission meeting left some petitioners pleased; others get more time.

Normandy Shoppes

The developer of the proposed Normandy Shoppes asked for more time to flesh out plans for a 14,000-square feet shopping center at the corner of Crooks and Normandy.

In March, the Royal Oak Planning Commission asked the A.F. Jonna Development & Management Co. to talk to the School District of the City of Royal Oak before it would consider approving a proposed shopping center next to Royal Oak High School.

Tim Thwing, director of planning, confirmed the developer spoke to the school district and then requested more time. The item will come back on the May agenda.

Phantom Fireworks

The panel also put Phantom Fireworks on hold.

Alan Co. petitioned to place a temporary tent and storage container for fireworks sales at Ray & Sons Auto Repair for 10 days (June 27-July 6).

Planning commissioners requested representatives of Ray & Sons return in May to address parking and safety concerns.

Agenda items approved

  • Sweet Science Holdings, Inc. — special land use and site plan to establish Title Boxing Club fitness center within the existing Douglas J Aveda Institute building  at 409 S. Center St.
  • Union Brewery, LLC — special land use and site plan to permit conversion of office space for expansion of Monk’s at 419 S. Main St.
