Consumer Fireworks Permitted July 3-5 in Royal Oak

Dogs and cats should begin hiding. Wednesday through Friday, it's legal to ignite roman candles, bottle rockets, firecrackers and mortars in Royal Oak per the city's 2012 Fireworks Ordinance.

The city's code, which was amended last year, allows the use of consumer fireworks  the day before, day of, and day after a national holiday.

While the use of fireworks will be permitted July 3, 4 and 5, it doesn't mean it's a free-for-all, according to Lt. Dave Clemens of the Royal Oak Police. The city's noise and nuisance ordinances still apply, he said.

"If a neighbor complains, we'll send officers over to investigate," Clemens warned.

As a reminder, people under age 18 are never allowed to possess or handle fireworks and fireworks are not allowed in Royal Oak parks or other public property including streets and sidewalks. Violators may be fined up to $500, plus court costs.

The Royal Oak City Commission will be considering a revision to the ordinance to further limit the use of fireworks to the hours between 8 a.m. and midnight on the days when their use is not already prohibited, according to a city media statement.

Residents observing anyone violating the fireworks ordinance can call the Royal Oak Police at 248-246-3500.  It is important that you call while it is happening.
