Mixed Signals: Royal Oak Approves Traffic Signal Improvements for Woodward/Coolidge Intersection
A design for 13 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway traffic signal improvements is scheduled to begin construction this summer.
Over the years the Royal Oak Police Department received a number of calls regarding the intersection of Coolidge Highway and Woodward Avenue. Drivers heading west on Coolidge would ring police wanting to know if it was OK to turn left on a red light after traffic cleared.
In 2012, the city applied for an available Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Safety Grant and it was determined that a "No Turn on Red" traffic sign be installed by MDOT in an attempt to definitively answer the question.
Two years later, a design for 13 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway traffic signal improvements is scheduled to begin construction this summer.
"This project will be federally funded with local match," said City Manager Don Johnson in a memo to the Royal Oak City Commission. "The project involves installing traffic signal poles to support new traffic signals, which will include a new left turn phase for north and southbound traffic. The project also includes construction of ADA compliant handicap ramps for crossing Coolidge and 13 Mile Road at all crossing locations."
On Monday, the Royal Oak City Commission authorized Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick, of Shelby Township, to provide MDOT's required construction engineering services the project for an estimated price tag of $20,505.
