Names in the News: Laura Dougherty Celebrates National Music Week

City Commission acknowledges the accomplishments of a Royal Oak Musicale member.

Mayor Jim Ellison and the City Commission acknowledged National Music Week by honoring Laura Dougherty, 91, of Royal Oak Musicale.

“We ask that all citizens observe and take part in activities recognizing the importance of music, musicians, and musical organizations to the cultural life of our city, state, nation and world,” said Ellison as he presented Dougherty with a proclamation from the Royal Oak City Commission on Monday.

“Our job is to teach the young music, because music is life. It’s spirit," said Dougherty.

Musicale, established in 1924, provides free music programs and awards scholarships to deserving young performers.

Dougherty told the mayor it's a pleasure to live in Royal Oak.

"Royal Oak is not only the city of trees, now it’s the city of restaurants. It’s the city of music. You’ll really find anything you want in Royal Oak," Dougherty said.
