New Starbucks, Billy Sims BBQ, Condominium Plan on Agenda

The Royal Oak Planning Commission will hear input on proposal to construct coffee house with drive-through service on Woodward Avenue.

The Royal Oak Planning Commission will tackle a busy agenda when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

Starbucks

A plan to demolish Morisette Automotive at 30712 Woodward Ave. and construct a new Starbucks with a drive-through service and outdoor dining area will be presented and open for public discussion.

The proposal calls for a new coffee house with 21 parking spaces; that's six spaces short of the 27 spaces required for a 2,000-square-foot building with a 160-square-foot outdoor cafe.

Condominium plan

A public hearing is on the agenda for developer Robertson Brothers Co.'s request to divide the Royal Oak Schools administration site (1123 Lexington Blvd.) into 36 individual lots for single-family homes. In July, the developer presented a plan for 42 individual lots on the same site.

It's the Planning Department's opinion that if the site is developed as proposed, future homeowners will complain about activities at Worden Park, Total Soccer and Lindell Ice Arena, which surround the site.

Billy Sims BBQ

Legendary Lions running back Billy Sims will have a presence in Royal Oak with his fourth Michigan restaurant at 32980 Woodward Ave. (formerly Cottage Inn Pizza).

The Planning Commission will consider the petitioner's request to re-face an existing roof sign at the southwest corner of the building.

Billy Sims BBQ restaurants offer nine kinds of smoked meats — brisket (sliced and chopped), pulled pork, chicken breast, turkey breast, hot links, Polish sausage, bologna and ribs — as well as nine sides ranging from baked beans and baked potatoes to smoked corn on the cob and cole slaw.

There are no fried foods, including French fries. Everything is cooked in the smoker, there are no ovens or deep fryers. The meats are smoked on site over pecan wood.
