Polls Are Closed in Royal Oak: Now the Wait

Election Day is here. Rest assured a friendly election inspector is out there ready to help you exercise your right to vote – that is if you are registered and at the right polling place.

8 p.m.: Polls are closed. The city clerk's office is tallying up votes from the city's precincts, absentee ballots and write-in votes.

6:50 p.m.: At the Royal Oak Farmers Market, 205 voters is considered a 'steady' pace. "We give out stickers, mints and have sparkling personalities," joked Shannon Crepeau. "That's how we get voters."

6:30 p.m.: Voter turnout at the , precinct 4, is considered 'light' with 169 voters. Election workers say the pace started picking up slightly at 5 p.m.

1:50 p.m.: Election workers say voting turnout is  light at , with just 91 voters so far. Thomas Herpel, an election worker in Precinct 20, said people don't seem to be confused by the ballot change that requires voters to specify which party’s ballot they will be voting on.

9:53 a.m.: Have you noticed new faces working at your polling place? Last week the city of Royal Oak filled an immediate need for election workers for the primary. “We have a lot of our election workers in Florida this time of year,” said City Clerk Melanie Halas.

You might also notice some new technology in place. An election worker might swipe your driver’s license to record your information—name, address, and date of birth—into an electronic poll book, which replaces the green poll books of yesteryear. Your information may also be typed manually into the system. It all depends on the technology comfort level of workers.

8:45 a.m.: Voting is steady at the , according to Shannon Crepeau, an election inspector for Precinct 9. Crepeau reports 27 voters. A photographer from Getty Images was spotted taking photographs at the Farmers Market.

8:30 a.m.: (Precinct 6) reports having 22 voters casting ballots.
