Royal Oak Chosen for DIA Inside|Out Arts Program

Inside/Out coordinator for the DIA will present the program to city commissioners tonight.

A total of six works of art will be on display this summer, throughout Royal Oak, as part of Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Inside|Out. The program brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets and parks of metro Detroit.

Five of the pieces will be installed on private buildings throughout Royal Oak this summer, however, the courtyard between and the has been chosen as a site for a freestanding installation. In April, Royal Oak's Commission for the Arts approved the city's participation in the program.

Commissioners will decide tonight on a resolution to approve an installation of “The Recitation”, a Thomas Wilmer Dewing painting depicting women, chairs, and clusters of fireflies, according to a memo to commissioners from Stewart Meek, assistant to the city manager.

The artwork is, in part, chosen to complement the new butterfly garden at the library, Meeks said.

Michelle Hauske, Inside/Out coordinator for the DIA, will present the program at the , emphasising on the library installation.
