Royal Oak OKs Arts Program Installation, Residents Survey and More

City Commission also handles budget, K2/Spice, Arts, Beats & Eats parking and more on a long agenda for Monday night's meeting.

The Royal Oak City Commission approved a list of items on its agenda at Monday night’s regular meeting.

DIA Inside|Out library installation approved

Commissioners approved  – a Thomas Wilmer Dewing painting depicting women, chairs and clusters of fireflies – for the butterfly garden as part of the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside|Out arts program.

A total of six works of art will be on display throughout downtown Royal Oak from July through September. The Inside|Out program brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets and parks of Metro Detroit.

Michelle Hauske, Inside/Out coordinator for the DIA, revealed the locations of the other five pieces of art that will be installed on private buildings. They are:

City OKs Residents Survey 

Commissioners approved a contract with the Public Affairs Research Laboratory (PARL) at Oakland University to begin working on a survey project to find out residents’ perception of how well the city is doing and what programs and services are a priority to residents.

Another goal of the survey is to find out how residents feel about other topics such as a proposed millage, refuse collection, special collection needs, branding and downtown plans.

The survey would be mailed to 800 randomly selected registered voters in Royal Oak with hopes that at least 382 surveys would be returned.

Budget adopted; Arts, Beats & Eats parking station ordinance and more

The Royal Oak City Commission also approved a list of items during its meeting Monday night, including:

  • resolutions to adopt the 2012/2013 fiscal year budget
  • a recommendation to the eliminate the Ice Arena Oversight Committee and assign oversight of the arena to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
  • an ordinance to require downtown businesses to obtain a license if they wish to conduct a parking station during Arts, Beats & Eats
