UPDATE: School District Properties on Planning Commission Agenda

The Planning Commission met Tuesday at Royal Oak City Hall.

The Royal Oak Planning Commission tackled a short agenda at its meeting Tuesday at City Hall.

School district sites on the agenda

Two sites owned by the Royal Oak School District were on Tuesday's agenda.

Developer Robertson Brothers Co. asked that the request to divide the former school administration site (1123 Lexington Blvd.) into 42 individual lots for single-family homes be postponed until August.

Tim Thwing, director of planning, told planning commissioners the developer submitted plans but there was not enough time for a staff review prior to Tuesday's meeting.

At W. 11 Mile Road and Maxwell Avenue, planning commissioners approved Town Building Co.'s request to subdivide a portion of the former Longfellow Elementary site and build a dozen multiple-family dwelling units within three buildings and an additional two single-family detached homes.

Planning Commissioner Tom Hallock was in favor of the residential development on the site that had previously been approved for a commercial strip mall. With its proximity to the South Oakland YMCA, Hallock said he was willing to make some trade-offs with the developer to assure the site addressed safety and security for the many children that pass through the Y each day.
