Plans for 4-Story Hotel Scrapped, Commercial Building Now Proposed for Sagamore Site

Ari-El Enterprises wants to construct a multiple-unit commercial building at the 1.18-acre site located at 30776 Woodward Ave.

The owners of the Travelodge (also known as the Sagamore Motor Lodge) have new plans for redevelopment of the motel property to present to the Royal Oak Planning Commission next Tuesday.

Ari-El Enterprises wants to construct a multiple-unit commercial building at the 1.18-acre site located at 30776 Woodward Ave.

4-story hotel scrapped

In August 2012, Zaid Elia, of Elia Group, and Arie Lebovitz, of Ari-El Enterprises, told Royal Oak City Commissioners they planned to build a 4-story hotel on the site that would serve residents and visiting doctors along with the general public. To do so, the Travelodge owners requested the city vacate a portion of Sagamore Boulevard to allow for redevelopment. That did not happen.

Drive-through coffee house

New site plans prepared by Abro Design Group, Inc. call for a commercial building with three units ranging in size from 2,045 to 3,600 square feet. Plans indicate a drive-through coffee house at the north end, a standard restaurant with dine-in seating at the south end and a retail sales unit in the middle. Each restaurant includes its own outdoor seating area.

Elevations indicate exterior building materials for the project would consist of split face masonry veneer, brick veneer, cast stone and steel canopies.

A special land use and site plan public hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at City Hall.
