Who will be Royal Oak's Next Mayor Pro-Tem?

The resignation of Patricia Capello means commissioners have to choose a mayor pro-tem when they meet at 7:30 p.m. today at City Hall.

As part of Monday night's city commission meeting, Royal Oak commissioners will need to fill the mayor pro-tem position left vacant following the departure of Patricia Capello.

The position is selected from current elected commissioners. Following the city charter, the person chosen fulfills the mayor's duties during temporary absences and disabilities.

Two weeks ago, commissioners were caught off guard when Capello announced at the end of the May 20 city commission meeting she would soon be relocating to Texas. Capello told commissioners she had purchased her "dream home" in the Lone Star State and needed to focus all of her efforts on her family and the relocation.

The commission will also discuss filling the six months left on Capello's term at its meeting.

City Attorney Dave Gillam, told Patch last week that the city charter provides a vacancy be filled by appointment of a majority vote of the remaining members of the commission, but it doesn't describe the exact process or specify a time frame.

"The commission can decide on a long drawn out process or have a discussion at a public meeting and make an appointment," Gillam said.

Another more formal option would be to ask for letters of interest and conduct interviews, he said.

The City Commission is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. for its regular meeting on the third floor of City Hall.
