A weekly description of the various activities take place at the RO Historical Society Museum.

A WEEK AT THE MUSEUM

Sat. April 27, 2013

A beautiful day outside, so did not expect many visitors.

Find out what's happening in Royal Oakwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Chuck and Marjean Schneider were the first to visit.  Marjean is a member
of the Ezra Parker Chap. Of the DAR and was interested in our Founding Families
Exhibit.  Chuck offered to donate his uniforms from the 1960s, just after Korea
and before Vietnam.  Chuck promised to loan us other items for our Korea/Vietnam Exhibit coming this November.

Don and Adair Calder dropped in.  Don wanted me to review his story
that he is writing for our Guest Column on our website.  A great story.

Pam Robbins and her Aunt, Harriet Walden came in just 10 minutes before closing…..I “ran” them through the exhibit and they promised to come in earlier soon.

Tues. April 30, 2013

A quiet rainy afternoon at the Museum.  Volunteer Randy Burean is
working to put all of the composite graduation pictures in the large flip
folder.  Volunteer Lindsay Zaremski worked to finalize the Fire Dept. 10-page
history booklet that will be printed and handed out at the Celebration on May
11th, at the Museum.

Volunteer Libby Walker worked with Frank Versagi updating the volunteer handbook for cataloguing artifacts.

Dianna Wing of the S.O. Eccentric came in to do a story about the ROFD 100th Anniversary celebration to be held here at the Museum on Sat. May 11th from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Judy Davids from R.O. Patch came in to get more information about the 100th celebration.

Thursday, May 2, 2013.

The morning started with a visit from Eva Amine, of the Hanna Bros. Co. John Hanna is remodeling D’Amatos and Good Nite Gracies and is very interested in pictures of the Washing Sq. Bldg.   We found 13 beginning with the construction,
several shots of the building and the various businesses from the 30’s to 1964.  These pictures will join two other businesses in town that have the Museum’s photos on display.  Bill Robert’s Town Tavern and Paul Glantz’s Emagine Theatre.  Both have given the Museum generous donations for the use of the photos.

Nathan Muller from the R.O. Review came in and interviewed retired Fire Fighter Rick Sage about the ROFD 100thAnniversary.  Rick was here with his wife
Maureen who was planting flowers while Rick cut the grass.

Debbie Sobolewski, a Mom involved with the RO Schools came in to find pictures for a luncheon the parents are planning for the teachers to celebrate the High School’s 100th Anniversary.  Volunteers Rita Simonds, Randy Burean & Johanna Schurrer found several for her, as well as two year books from 1920s that Susan Wolfrum will make copies from several pages for her.

A Mom and her 2 young children, Sharon & Fleet, came in and spent time looking at the Fire Dept. Display.

Michael DuLong, a French and Indian War Re-enactor offered to loan his Great Grandfathers Carpenters Bench and Tools for next year when we do Founding Families from 1910 through the 1940s.

Two other gentlemen, Chris Kraska & George McFaul came in to visit but I did not have the opportunity to speak with them at length.  Mr. McFaul purchased one of our great Museum Mugs.

Chuck Schnieder brought in at least a dozen Vietnam uniforms that he wore. He donated all of them to us….I said we could not possibly use them all, that he hould take them to Joe’s Army – Navy Store and sell them.  Chuck said “You take them and sell them and keep the money for the Museum.”

Sat. May 4, 2013

An 11 a.m. appointment at Museum with the founder of a local civic organization, to discuss the possibility of doing a fundraiser for the organization at the Museum.  The ROHS Bd of Directors will discuss and decide how this will work.

Debbie Solbolewski, the High School Mom, came in to pick up the photos that Susan Wolfrum did such an amazing job reproducing for the Teachers’ Thank You Luncheon.  Debbie was really pleased with the results.

Rick & Maureen Sage, the
Museum’s Volunteer Landscaping Crew, dropped in to kill weeds.  They’ll be back.

Peggy Garrigues, came in to look at our 1927 RO High School yearbook for her Grandmother, May E. Littlefield, and graduating class.  I made a few quick copies for her Mom to look at before she went home.  She asked if we could make better copies of a few of them?  Of course Susan can…

Ed Kalil, a volunteer who did some amazing repair on two of our wood doors in the main area of the Museum,  stopped in to ask if we wanted a “Fire Hydrant” his wife had bought him several years ago….?

I said “of course.”   Ed left and came back in 20 minutes with a real hydrant…weighs a ton.  Glenn, Randy and Mike will have to figure out where it is going to be placed….Every day is Christmas…We are always getting
presents.

At about 7 minutes to 4 p.m. ,
a gentleman came in to visit…just to see what we had…he lives in Hunting Woods.  I "ran" him through the Museum, he gave us a donation, and said he would be back.
