Stay Cool in Royal Oak This Summer!

I think we can safely say that we are finally starting to see some summer weather! With a high of around 84 predicted today, it's time to think of fun ways to stay cool with the kids.

Here are some ideas for keeping cool, "weather" :) you are splashing, relaxing or hanging indoors!

Splash!
You might have a pool (in which case...um, hi, I'm Karen and I'd like to be your friend!) but even if you don't (or even if you do! Variety is great!) there are some fun options for playing in the water right nearby:

  • Enjoy free splashtime 7 days a week at the Fountains at Warren City Square! An outdoor splash pad with several types of fountains that spray at intervals, the Fountains are a great place to play with little tots just starting to sit up all the way to bigger kids. On busy days you will often find hot dog vendors and other activities, too! Map to Warren City Square is here: http://goo.gl/maps/lkAxL
  • For some fun water variety, check out Red Oaks Waterpark! A big four-slide waterslide, an awesome wave pool with free tubes to float in, a lazy river, a splash pad and a fun water playground, Red Oaks has something for all ages. Picnic shelters, locker rooms, free deck chairs and other amenities are available, too. Discounted price for Oakland County residents. Get there early on busy days, though -- this is one popular place!

Relax!
  • A low-key way to keep cool: find some shade! Starr Jaycee Park, Memorial Park and the VFW Park are all good places to lay down a picnic blanket beneath a canopy of trees. If the kiddos get tired of the playground equipment, try an impromptu scavenger hunt -- write a list of or bring photos of stuff they might find in the park (pinecones, leaves, sticks, etc. )and have them see if they can find the items!
  • Enjoy storytime in the fresh air at the Royal Oak Public Library. Upcoming storytimes on Monday, June 24 (10:15-11 a.m.), Monday, July 1 (10:15-11 a.m.), and Monday, July 8 (10:15-11 a.m.)

Take Cover!
Sometimes, the heat is just too hot or a t-storm rolls in and the only solace is to seek shelter, preferably where there is plentiful A/C. Some good choices nearby:
  • Detroit Kid City is a local favorite for its kid-size mini-city (where kids can actually play the guitars in the little Hitsville USA!) and delicious coffee drinks and smoothies. They occasionally offer good deals through their Facebook page. All visitors get craft materials upon arrival if they want to work in the crafts area, there are regular storytimes, and a little play area for the littlest kiddos in your group.
  • The South Oakland YMCA offers many classes (including art, gymnastics and more) and opportunities (like open swim) for indoor fun! Most of their classes start at age 3, but there is a Creative Movement class that welcomes 1 1/2 year olds and up. A bonus is you can get a membership for your whole family, or even just for your child(ren)! Their summer program guide is available here.
  • Don't forget about the Detroit Zoo! Even when the weather is chilly or a little drizzly, the indoor exhibits are still great to check out. Hang out with the polar bears, penguins and amphibians for an afternoon! And if it's a Saturday between 10-3, venture downtown to check out the zoo's cousin, the Belle Isle Aquarium
  • Stay indoors and try out some cool "rainy day" activities!
