Area Students to Get First-Hand Look at How Government Works

During Annual Youth in Government Day, students will learn about the political process as part of a 34-year youth leadership development tradition in Oakland County.

Students from several Oakland County school districts learn about county government later this month as participants in the Annual Youth in Government Day.

At 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 24, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners will welcome high school students to the program, organized this year around the theme “Ready and Resilient Counties: Prepare. Respond. Thrive.”

The program will begin in the Board of Commissioners' Auditorium, located at 1200 North Telegraph Road. Area high school 10th-12th grade students from Ferndale, Milford, Novi, Pontiac, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield, Walled Lake, and White Lake will meet county government officials. They will learn first-hand about the political process as part of the 34-year youth leadership development tradition of Oakland County.

Students will meet members of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, the deputy county executive/chief information officer, sit in on a Board Commissioners Finance Committee meeting, meet other county-wide elected officials including the County Clerk, the county water resources commissioner, the county treasurer and the chief Circuit Court judge.

Students will meet representatives from the county’s Homeland Security Division and the Oakland County Sheriff Division. They will see special presentations and view the response equipment/vehicles such as the Humvee,  the Mobile Command Unit,  the Sheriff’s Bear equipment,  and the K-9 Unit.

Students will also visit the Oakland County 6th Judicial Circuit Court.
