Ask the Super: Did the Cold Snap Cause Any Building Issues for Schools?

Royal Oak Schools Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said there were a few minor problems, but that school staff worked hard to resolve building issues during the recent deep freeze.

Royal Oak Patch checked in with Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin today to see how district school buildings handled the recent frigid temperatures. Here's his report:

Did the cold snap cause any building issues for schools?

During school vacation periods - including extended vacation periods - we check all of our buildings on a regular basis. During the cold we did have an issue with a frozen pipe, which caused a boiler in one building to go down.   This occurred at Addams Elementary School yesterday, Wednesday. As a result, we did need to cancel daycare and relocate the school-age snow day child care program to another building for the day.  Today, we had another minor issue at Addams; it was resolved between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. (but, yes, I was notified of it and we were monitoring the situation carefully.)

How did the first day back go?

Today has gone as well as can be expected. I was at both Royal Oak Middle School and Addams Elementary at the start of the day today. I plan to be at a building at the end of the day as well.  We did have an issue this morning with some sidewalks along private property near the middle school that had not been cleared. We are contacting the property owners to see how we can assist them in clearing their sidewalks.

Anything else?

I do want to thank the many community members who have done a great job clearing the sidewalks, providing a safe path for those of our students who do walk to and from school.  I also want to thank and commend the City of Royal Oak staff members as well as those who provide services to Royal Oak Schools on their efforts to be sure our roads, parking lots and buildings are in as safe as condition as possible.

Yes, please do something about the walks around the ROMS. Once again many were not shoveled and plowing was hampered by annoying motorist who again didn't move their vehicles. I certainly hope the police did ticket these people. In fact, they should increase ticket fees in these areas since we have no school busing.
