Consumers Energy Hosts Indoor Trick-Or-Treating for Upton Kindergartners

Employees at the Consumers Energy Service Center, 4600 Coolidge Hwy., passed out candy and other goodies to costumed children Thursday as part of a longstanding Halloween tradition with Upton Elementary School.

"The students trick-or-treat throughout the building through all the various departments and then they come back for a few activities and a brief presentation on gas safety," said Ursula Warren of Consumers Energy.

Warren said the event is just as much fun for the employees as it is for students. Employees begin asking weeks in advance when the kids are coming and how many, she said. Employees purchase candy for the students with their own money.

"As a testament to how long we've been doing this, I was at a local store recently and the cashier asked me, 'Do you still do the trick-or-treating at Consumers?' She told me, 'I went to Upton!'" Warren said. "She had to be 19 or 20 years old so that really made me feel good."

"It's just really fun that they are able to do this for us," said Janine Loveday, a teacher at Upton. "The kids really enjoy it. I think we are really fortunate to have a good partnership with Consumers."

Loveday said the school provided Consumers employees with a list of allergy-free snacks.

"They were on board with that," she said. "It just shows their willingness to go the extra mile for our kids."

There was one complaint heard during the hour long event and that was: "My arms are getting tired from holding all this candy!"
