Meet Royal Oak High School's New Principal

Mike Van Camp, of the L'Anse Creuse School District, replaces Jim Moll as principal of Royal Oak High School.

The Royal Oak Board of Education approved the hire of Mike Van Camp as principal of Royal Oak High School on Thursday.

Van Camp comes to Royal Oak from L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, where he has been principal at L’Anse Creuse Middle School–East since 2006. His resume also includes experience as a high school athletic director and assistant principal, as well as a middle school assistant principal.   

“I want you to know that I sought out Royal Oak and I know I said in the interview I probably would not have applied anywhere else," Van Camp told members of the school board. ”I'm coming from a really good place and I'm coming to a great place."

Van Camp earned a bachelor of science in secondary education and a masters of educational administration from the Central Michigan University. He also earned an elementary specialist degree from Saginaw Valley State University. He has been in secondary education administration since 1997.

“He brings extensive building leadership experience, a commitment to excellence, and an understanding of the critical role community plays in the success of schools," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin. "I look forward to what his leadership will mean for our students, our school, and our community.”

Van Camp will replace current Interim Principal Jim Moll, who is retiring at the end of this school year.

"I know I have some pretty big shoes to fill, but I like it better that way," Van Camp said.
