New Assistant Principals Named at High School, Middle School

Karen Powell Named Assistant Principal at Royal Oak High School

Royal Oak Schools announces the appointment of Karen Powell as Assistant Principal, Royal Oak High School.

Powell comes to Royal Oak from the Romulus School District where she served for the past eleven years. She began her professional career in Romulus in 2002 teaching Biology and Earth Science. Subsequently she became Acting Administrator of the Community Middle/High School and Halecreek Elementary School and has been Assistant Principal of Romulus Senior High School since 2010.

Powell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, Earth and General Science, from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership (Administration) from Madonna University.  

She has received numerous honors and awards including the Michigan Alternative Education Organization Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award and Michigan Association of School Boards Education Excellence Award.

Powell replaces Sam Lynch who was named Principal of Oakland Elementary School.

Joseph Youanes Named Royal Oak Middle School Assistant Principal

Royal Oak Schools announces the appointment of Joseph Youanes as Assistant Principal, Royal Oak Middle School (ROMS).

Youanes has been an elementary teacher, head teacher and summer school administrator in the Troy School District. He began his professional career teaching at Troy’s Costello Elementary School  in 2004 where he subsequently became Head Teacher. He has served as Summer School Principal/Program Coordinator and Gifted and Talented Program Coordinator.  He was also a member of the District’s Continuous Improvement Team and acted as the North Central Association Accreditation/School Improvement Visiting Team Coordinator.
