Royal Oak High School Choir Enters 'Glee' Contest

A Capella Choir students create fun music video. Now they need votes to win the prize money to refurbish the school auditorium.

The l A Cappella Choir needs help to refurbish the high school auditorium and you’ll be delighted — even Glee-ful — that it is not asking for money or carpenters. What the student singers need are votes.

“Our choir risers are really gross and the seats in the auditorium are in desperate need of repair,” said senior Alexandra Dulin, who along with choir officers Anna Marck, Elena Yarmy, Katie Faddol and Choir Director Debbie Buffa, decided to enter the Glee Give a Note contest to win funds to replace broken risers and 54-year-old seats.

The Glee Give A Note contest is the invention of Ryan Murphy, the creator of the hit television show Glee, the National Association for Music Education, and the Give a Note Foundation. The contest will award three $50,000 grand prizes, 10 first prizes worth $25,000 and 60 second prizes worth $10,000 to students who perform or re-create their most memorable Glee moment on video.

When Buffa heard about the contest she knew she could count on her choir officers to come up with something creative. “These girls had recently done some creative arranging when giving their officer speeches last spring. I knew they could do this,” she said.

Dulin said it took about three hours to shoot a two-minute video that includes Principal Mike Greening as a rapper.

In addition to busted risers and tattered seats, Buffa said pianos have white and black keys missing and broken legs, the auditorium has a broken soundboard and the group no longer has buses for festivals or a sound engineer.

“If we win, all of the prize money would definitely be put to good use,” Buffa said.
