Classrooms will remain locked until teachers arrive at them tomorrow morning," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin in an email to Royal Oak Patch. As teachers arrive, they will open their rooms and then stay in them so students can come by and retrieve any  belongings that were left when students were evacuated this afternoon.

"We appreciate everyone's cooperation and patience today," said Lewis-Lakin. "Because our telephone and email servers are housed at the high school, our communications were impacted by this event. We do have plans for moving these systems to off site locations with redundancy."

1:30 p.m.: Students at Royal Oak High School were evacuated at approximately 12:30 p.m. after a transformer located in the building malfunctioned, according to Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin.

The Royal Oak Fire Department responded to the incident.

"There was light smoke, but the students were never in danger," said Acting Assistant Chief, Kevin Pierzynski. "The school does a good job of making sure the kids are safe. This is just an electrical problem."

Students were sent home, Lewis-Lakin said. Those without a means of transportation are being sheltered in the John Lindell Ice Arena and at Total Soccer until they can be picked up by parents, Lewis-Lakin said.

Crews were working on the electrical issue Tuesday afternoon.
