Royal Oak Schools Closed, City Declares Snow Emergency

Due to poor winter road conditions, Royal Oak Schools are closed on Thursday, Jan. 2.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon. Persistent light snow will continue through the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The City of Royal Oak has declared a snow emergency Wednesday, meaning vehicles are to remain off city streets until plow trucks have gone through the area. "Once a snow emergency is called and plowing begins, it takes approximately 24-36 hours to plow all city streets, depending on how much snow has fallen," according to the city.

Drivers are urged to take their time and use caution. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.

Here's hoping the city tickets the morons who still park on our street.

I've never seen it happen yet but I sure wish it would! People on my street and their friends have a drive to park in but they don't. Makes it hard for the rest of us. It would be more money for the city but the ticket maids or officers would rather case the parking lots and pick off the low hanging fruit.

This from Chief Corrigan O'Donohue on the subject of issuing tickets: "Enforcement begins six hours after an emergency is declared. Once a snow emergency is declared ALL vehicles must be removed from the roadway. We systematically check the streets to try to stay ahead of the plows. We will continue to write snow emergency violations until a street is plowed."

The last big snow there were tickets all over the neighborhoods just south of Lincoln. We were just leaving a party when they came through in advance of the plows.

I live on the street where the Hertz store is on the corner. there are at least 8 of their cars parked on our street since Monday. I called Hertz this morning to have them moved and called ROPD to notify them as well. As of 1 PM none of the cars were moved or ticketed that I can tell.

Last snow fall was a nightmare around ROMS and I can imagine the elementary schools. Since we no longer have busing, it just makes it all the worst.
