Royal Oak Students' ACT, MME Scores Outperform State Averages Again

In every subject area, scores for Royal Oak High School improved over 2012.

Royal Oak High School students continue to score above the state average on the Michigan Merit Exam (MME), and scores in all subjects in Royal Oak increased in the 2012-13 school year, according to a report released by the Michigan Department of Education this morning.

The test, taken each spring by high school juniors, showed that the Class of 2014 scored higher than recently graduated peers in reading, math, science, writing and social studies.

"There is always variation year to year because we are looking at different cohort groups," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin. "When we look at scores, we look at improvement trends. These positive results say a lot about the commitment of the staff at Royal Oak High School to improving learning for all of our students."

Over the past four years, more high school students are being taught challenging content and are becoming career-and college-ready, according to State Superintendent, Mike Flanagan.

“While assessment score fluctuations are not unusual when comparing different classes of students, results show the need to continue the state’s strong commitment to high standards," Flanagan said.

ROHS students also took the ACT college entrance exam. Royal Oak's average composite ACT score was 21.7 in 2013, up from 21 in 2012. Royal Oak's ACT score is above the state average of 19.7 out of a possible 36.
