Shoe Reveal: Royal Oak Cross Country Team Laces Up Winning Shoes
Cross country star Ben Hill is "quite the visionary," according to his teammates.
It was all cheers when coaches Ryan Piippo and Dave Barnett carried two big boxes filled with brand new running shoes into the Royal Oak High School cafeteria on Wednesday afternoon.
Thanks to Ben Hill, a junior cross country and track standout, each member of the cross country team was given a pair of New Balance shoes valued at $125 each.
Hill beat out 4,000 high school students to win the New Balance Cross Country Colorwars design contest in August.
Judging for the shoe contest was based on creativity, style and public votes. The winner was entitled to bragging rights and complimentary shoes for his or her teammates.
"I'd have to say these are the coolest spikes I've ever seen," said Dale Mallette, a senior. "And I'd have to say Ben is quite the visionary when it comes to designing things."
