Spring seems so far away

For many, after

This past week when

Twenty young lives were lost

To the daffodils’

“One flower, one stem,

One flower, one stem,”

Repeated

The marching grey clouds

Of December

The swirling, flowing flowers

Overcrowding a familiar hill

Out east and seemingly

On the other side of life-

A slope no one wants to touch

But we’ll eventually breathe someday

The others peek

Over the neatly cut hedges

From their warm encrusted souls

Heated by the sun-

Warming their soil

And by the way,

As if they didn’t know

It’s the same light

Shared

With those yellowing daffodils
