ROHS Advances, Shrine Falls in Boys Basketball Tournament Play

Ravens pull out win over Andover to face Brother Rice; Shrine drops first-round game to Bishop Foley.

In the high school version of March Madness — the 2011 Michigan High School Athletic Association's boys basketball tournament – one Royal Oak school moves on and one is done for the season.

The Royal Oak Ravens found enough magic Monday night to beat Bloomfield Hills Andover, 46-37, at Groves High School in Birmingham.  evened its season record to 10-10 with the district win.

"I'm just happy we survived to play another day," Ravens head coach Gary Sharpe said. "Probably the biggest stat of the game is (junior) Martel Porter had 20 points and 16 rebounds."

Royal Oak didn't fare as well Monday, losing its first round game 52-45 to Bishop Foley High School at Bishop Foley in Madison Heights.

Shrine head coach Mike Massucci had his team in step, but couldn't find the winning rhythm to advance. "It was a back and forth game," he said. "They jumped out to a 9-0 lead, but we battled back."

Shrine held a 1-point lead entering the fourth quarter, 38-37. "We had the lead with 1:29 to go, but Bishop Foley was 9-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth," Massucci said.

Free throws were the key in the loss as Bishop Foley ended up 12-16 from the line while Shrine was 6-12. Shrine junior Lorenzo Dewberry had 16 points and senior Bertram Marks had 10.

Shrine finishes its season 12-9 while Bishop Foley advances to the next round to take on Lutheran Northwest on Wednesday.
