Royal Oak Soccer Alums to Compete in Fundraiser

Former high school girls soccer players are coming home to raise money for the team.

Both teams will be the "home" team and everyone will be a winner when former Royal Oak high school girls soccer players return for a fundraiser match against current players. The event begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the soccer field and all money raised will be used to fund the girls soccer program, head coach Kevin Robb said.

"This event is to gather funds for athletic scholarships to graduating seniors that are on the varsity team," Robb said. "I want to invite all to come and watch if they have either played for or had a daughter that has played for either Dondero, Kimball or Royal Oak in the past or if they just want to come out and support the players."

Entry into the game will be by donation and the concession stand will be open for food and drink sales.

In addition to the fundraising aspect of the day, Robb and the players want to make the event a time to get to know "the whole soccer family."

"This is to of course raise funds, but also be a social event that has been missing," Robb explained. "The passion that soccer players have for the game is second to none and this will be a way of letting them have some fun to play the game that they grew up with again with all their friends."

So far, 18 players have responded to play in the alumni game – most are graduates from Royal Oak High within the past four years, Robb said.

"I hope to get Kimball and Dondero graduates to come and play also," he said. "The format has not been set yet as I need to see what kind of numbers we will have. They may play against each other if there is enough or they may play against the current varsity team if the numbers are low. This is our first go-round at this so I have no idea as what to expect. I'm planning on having a half time shoot-out contest and a juggling contest so players can show off their skills."

There will be some who will sit out.

"The coaching staff will not be participating," Robb said. "We are too old and frail."
