Royal Oak Spring Sports Finally in Full Swing

After being held up by wet weather, tennis, soccer, baseball, softball, golf and lacrosse are seeing some more consistent action.

With mystical Michigan spring weather in full force, action at local athletic fields has been sporadic. Here's a handy guide on what's going on:

Shrine High School

Girls soccer

It will be a week of travel for the soccer team as they hit the road May 3 for a match at Our Lady of the Lakes/Everest (Clarkston Everest Collegiate) at 5 p.m. and a noon game May 7 at Hamtramck. The team then travels to Cardinal Mooney on May 8 for a 5:30 p.m. match.

Track

On May 3, the team travels to Harper Woods High School for a meet with Harper Woods and Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard It hits the road again May 6 to compete in the Ottawa Hills Invitational in Grand Rapids. In earlier season action, the girls defeated Bishop Foley 78-48 and Lutheran Northwest 71-48 on April 26 while the boys team defeated Bishop Foley 83-45 and Lutheran Northwest 71-57.

 "We have been a work in progress and (April 26) outcome was closer to what expect as a team," head coach Wright Wilson said. "We are shaking off the rust and we feel more comfortable as we get more competitive. Beating Bishop Foley and Lutheran Northwest was a huge step forward for us."

Boys baseball

The 6-4 (5-1) Shrine team has two travel dates this week, May 2 at Cardinal Mooney and May 5 at Our Lady of the Lakes. Coach Dan Noble was working on hosting a makeup game with Riverview Richard on May 4 but hasdnot finalized the game yet. All games begin at 4:30 p.m.

Girls softball

It's been almost three weeks (including spring break) since Shrine has seen live game action, but there are 13 games scheduled over the next seven days. Posting a 5-3 record — all league games — the games include hosting Cranbrook in a doubleheader May 2 and Mt. Carmel on May 4. Makeup games include doubleheaders May 3 against Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes and May 8 against Cardinal Moody. May 4, Mount Carmel comes to Shrine and May 6 Shrine travels to Sacred Heart. All of the games begin at 4:30 p.m. On May 7, Shrine "travels" to Royal Oak High School to compete in the Fred Pieper Tournament.

Boys Golf

On May 2 at 4 p.m. the linksters hosted Cabrini and May 5 Ann Arbor Richard comes to town. On May 9, Shrine travels to Oakland Christian for a 2:45 p.m. tee time.

Tennis

Madison Heights Bishop Foley was at Shrine on May 2 at 4 p.m. The team is to compete in the Royal Oak Invitational at Royal Oak High School on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.

Girls soccer

The team hosts Rochester Adams at 6:45 p.m. May 3  On May 5, the Ravens travel to Rochester High School for a 6:45 p.m. contest. The soccer team lost April 28 to Stoney Creek, 3-1. Competing in the leagues top division — Oakland Activities Association's Red Division — for only the second time in the school's history, the girls are in the midst of a tough schedule and season.

"We will be going into this season with a little more knowledge as to what the competition will be like," head coach Kevin Robb said. "We have great support of parents, booster club, student body and especially from Brian Gordon, the school's athletic director."

The team consists of 19 players, but only three are seniors: captain Hannah Schario, Keara Scannell and Colleen Schuldeis. The seven juniors are Lauren Jaslove, Amber Lodeesen, Kacey Lawniczak (captain), Caroline Mitchell, Freida Blostein, Alexandra Dulin and Paige Pomroy. There are seven sophomores: Amber Owens, Gabby Morton, Haley Hoemke, Mary LeAnnais, Haley Smallwood, Allison Szydlowski and Tara Swanson. Two freshmen, Samantha Bartelotti and Nerissa Zoller, round out the team.

Boys baseball

A matchup at Seaholm started the week on May 2 followed by May 4 at Farmington High School and then May 6 the team travels to Lahser High School. All games start at 4:30 p.m..

Track

Boys varsity track is up and running at 4:15 p.m. May 3, hosting Ferndale in a dual meet. Boys and girls track will travel to Hazel Park High for a dual meet starting at 4:30 p.m. on May 6.

Girls softball

On May 2, the girls softball team hosted Ferndale in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. On May 4, the girls softball team hosts Birmingham Groves in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. There will be plenty of action on May 7 when the girls softball team hosts the Fred Pieper Softball tournament. The girls had two doubleheaders last week: April 27 they hosted Berkley and the second on April 29 when the team hosted Bloomfield Hills Andover.

Boys golf

The team competed in the Red Run Scramble on May 2. The next day, boys golf is in action hosting Birmingham Seaholm High School at 3:15 p.m. On April 27 the  (and the weather) at Rackham Golf Course.

Girls tennis

The girls tennis team travels to Pontiac for a 4:30 match May 6. The team hosted the Daily Tribune Tennis Invitational on April 30. It also hosted Berkley on April 27 and Southfield on April 28.

Boys lacrosse

Boys lacrosse hosts Farmington at 7 p.m. on May 5. The team hosts a senior game for players and parents on May 7 with a 2:30 p.m. game against Bishop Foley. The team is 1-6 this season.
