A Royal Oak woman describes how competing in half-marathons connects her to a son who succumbed to drugs in a heartfelt video series titled What Drives You to Run.
"I had a son who died when he was just shy of 20 of a drug overdose, and as you can imagine in family, it was horrible," said Royal Oak resident Catherine Goddard, 59, in the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers video series.
On days when Goddard feels down and wonders what she could have done differently, she runs. Within a mile, she starts to feel better, she said.
"He is with me a lot," she said. "I feel him running with me."
Goddard and four other Metro Detroiters describe motivating factors - ranging from grief to charity - in their training efforts to compete in the 2013 Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Half Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 20.
The five participants were selected by Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers after an official “callout” was posted on chevydetroit.com. To meet the 2013 What Drives You to Run half-marathon participants, visit chevydetroit.com/marathon2013.
