Viewfinder: 'Running Day in Royal Oak' in Action

Hundreds of people turned out at Quickstad Park on Tuesday to run in or watch high school, middle school and open races.

Tuesday was "Running Day in Royal Oak," as Royal High School and Royal Oak Shrine met at Quickstad Park. The Ravens won the boys race 22-37 and the Knights took the girls race 25-30.

Ben Hill of ROHS was the individual winner 16:14, followed closely by Shrine's Ben Kendall (2nd/16:17).

Max Benoit (3rd/16:32), Willie Davids (4th/16:56), Yousif Maizy (6th/18:36)  and John Slowik (8th/19:00) also scored for the Ravens, while Matt Arce (5th/18:12), Mike Guirey (7th/18:47), Brendan Battle (11th/20:29), and Kyle Pawloski (12th/20:45) had solid races for the Knights.

On the girls’ side, Lauren Bos was the individual winner 19:55. Shrine's Morgan Button finished second 19:45.

Madelyne Luddy (3rd/22:02), Grace Nagle (5th/22:34), Gabby Schmidt (7th/22:51) and Clare Romano (8th/22:58) also scored for the Knights. Erica Lee (4th/22:19), Bridget Vial (6th/22:46), Morgan Kempf (9th/23:02), and Lauren McMahon (10th/23:11) completed the Ravens lineup.

Following the 5K races, there were 2-mile, 1-mile and a 1/4-mile "Raven Run" race with teams from Shrine Academy and Our Lady of LaSalette in Berkley as well as Royal Oak Middle School’s intramural program.

More than 100 people participated in all five races.

Running Day is the brainchild of Ravens coaches Ryan Piippo and David Barnett to introduce the community to the lifelong sport of running.
