16 Contests to Be Held at Great Lakes State Fair

From pie eating to watermelon seed spitting, attendees of all ages can compete at the revamped Michigan State Fair on Labor Day weekend.

Organizers of Great Lakes State Fair have announced that daily contests will be held at the fair for everyone from infants to adults, testing talent, creativity and sheer zaniness.

The revamped Michigan state fair is at in Novi from Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

The contests are as follows, according to the fair website:

Carrot Drop

  • What it is: Contestants see who can get the most carrots in the milk jug while standing on a stool. The fair will provide everything—just bring your best arm and balance.
  • Contest Date: Friday at 11:30 a.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5-9 year olds

Hot Dog Eating

  • What it is: Contestants will race to see who can eat five hot dogs the fastest. Water is the only beverage allowed and the contest will be timed by a stop watch.
  • Contest Date: Friday at 12:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage 
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Pie Eating

  • What it is: No hands can be used during this contest and the first person to finish his/her whole pie and stand up will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, more than one first place winner will be selected.
  • Contest Date: Daily at 1:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 12 years and older

Watermelon Seed Spiting

  • What it is: Contestants will be provided with a chunck of watermelon where they will then take five seeds from the piece. All contestants will stand behind a plastic runner and whoever spits the seed the farthest will win.
  • Contest Date: Friday at 2:30 p.m. near the Demonstration Stage and Monday at 3:30 p.m. near the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Ice Cream Eating

  • What it is: Each contestant will have five minutes to eat as much ice cream as they can. The ice cream will be provided in 5-ounce containers. The contestant who eats the most will be declared the winner.
  • Contest Date: Friday at 3:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
    and Monday at 2:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Milk Mustache

  • What it is: Contestants grab a glass of milk and smile.  The contestant with the best milk mustache will win. 
  • Contest Date: Friday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Diaper Derby

  • What it is: The Diaper Derby is a fun event for crawling children. Crawlers participating will crawl from one cheering “coach” to the other. First to cross the finish line wins.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 11:30 a.m. near the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 2 years and younger

Longest Pony Tail, Beard or Mustache

  • What it is: Whoever has the longest pony tail, beard or mustance wins.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Twin, Triplets, Oh My!

  • What it is: Twins or triplets who look the most alike win.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Mother/Daughter and Father/Son Look-Alike

  • What it is: Contestants who look the most like their parents win.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Hula Hoop

  • What it is: Whoever can hula hoop the longest wins.
  • Contest Date: Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. near the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Husband and Wife Calling

  • What it is: Can you call your husband better than anybody else? What about your wife? Fair goers who think they can do either of these will have an opportunity to display their unique skills at the fair. Props and costumes are encouraged.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 18 years and older

Corn on the Cob Eating

  • What it is: Participants will be given five corn on the cobs and the first one to finish them all wins.
  • Contest Date: Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Frozen T-Shirt

  • What it is: Be the first to fit into a frozen t-shirt. Wet t-shirts are scrunched and frozen. The object of this contest is to thaw the t-shirt using only your body and successfully fit your head and arms into the shirt as for normal wear.
  • Contest Date: Sunday at 3:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 12 years and older

Pasta Eating

  • What it is: Each contestant will be given five minutes to consume as much spaghetti as possible. Each contestant will be given one plate of spaghetti at a time, and will be given a refill once plate is clean.
  • Contest Date: Saturday at 5:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older

Potato Sack Race

  • What it is: This is a solo race and all contestants will be provided a burlap bag.
  • Contest Date: Sunday and Monday at 11:30 a.m. near the Demonstration Stage
  • Ages Allowed: 5 and older
