Detroit Zoo Animals Chill Out with "Cold Play"

As beastly hot temperatures and high humidity prevail throughout the Metro region this week, the animals at the Detroit Zoo are playing it cool with environmental enrichment. Zookeepers will demonstrate how they help the animals beat the heat and indulge in a little “cold play”.

On  Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. check out the following cool events at the zoo:

• 11 a.m. – otters (ice treats and pool toys)
• 11:30 a.m. – anteaters (a gentle shower to play in)
• Noon – polar bears (ice treats)
• 12:30 p.m. – snow monkeys (ice treats)
• 1 p.m. – warthogs (mud wallow)

Environmental enrichment is provided daily at the Detroit Zoo to enhance animal habitats and make them more dynamic and engaging. It includes the introduction of novel and sometimes unpredictable elements such as objects, sounds, scents or other stimuli that give the animals the opportunity to express choice and control in their environments and to make decisions, express individuality and behave in species-typical ways.
