Warthogs Beat the Heat in Royal Oak

With summer heat building, the Detroit Zoo was a wonderful place to chill out Wednesday afternoon. Just ask the warthogs.

Zookeepers found ways to help animals beat the heat by serving up ice treats, pool toys, gentle showers and — in the case of the warthogs — a kiddy pool.

Adorable Daphne and Violet, warthog piglets born in April, wallowed in a small puddle in their African Grasslands habitat near the Africa Train Station. Zoo staff rigged a sprinkler to create a water park for the pair and their parents to run hog wild in the sun.

After, the family cooled off in the shade, where the mud solidified on their skin to help keep bugs away, according to zoo staff.
