Too many dead pets! Enough Pit Bull Attacks!!
In the last year or so we have had 4 Pit Bull attacks and 5 pet killings in Royal Oak. It is time we address this issue with a City Ordinance before somebody's child is hurt.
In the most recent Royal Oak City police report published12/19/12; there was yet another report about a Pit Bull attack killing a neighbor’s pet - where it stands this is 4 attacks in just over 1 year due to negligent owners and dangerous pets.

The Royal Oak Patch reported a resident of an apartment complex was outside with her small dog when her pet was attacked by pit bull. The pit bull also bit the dog's owner on her thumb when she tried to protect her dog. The resident who owned the pit bull was ticketed for the incident.

Royal Oak Patchreported Royal Oak officers responded to investigate the report of a dog thathad attacked another dog. The investigation revealed a pit bull and shepherd mix dog jumped the backyard fence into a neighbor's yard and killed a Chihuahua. The owner of the pit bull mix was issued a violation for a dangerous animal at large. The Pit Bull owner only later euthanized his pet.

The News-Herald reported a Pit Bull attacked a Leader Dogs for the Blind puppy in training in the middle of downtown Royal Oak, while with the blind client. Luckily 10 men on the scene were able to pry the aggressor dog off the puppy in time for the dog in training to sustain only minor injuries.

Royal Oak patch reported Royal Oak officers responded to a report of two pit bulls attacking a smaller dog. Upon arrival to the scene the officerfound the pit bulls were viciously attacking a smaller dog. A lone Royal Oak officer shot both of the pit bulls. The owner of the pit bulls was issued several ordinance violations. The dog that was attacked did not survive.
Unfortunately Royal Oak has had to sustain 5 needless pet deaths in the last year or so. In my opinion we have also been lucky we have dodged situations where people and more importantly children could have been hurt. It is only a matter of time until a child is harmed by one of these animals; if we do not do anything about it shame on us.
I am frankly growing impatient with the excuses people make for dangerous animals. People like to point out that other dogs may be violent - which I concede can be true. However I can’t help but notice that the ONLY animal attacks in Royal Oak I ever see reported involve Pit Bulls. Nor can people logically ignore the fact that this breed was specifically bred for aggression and violence, and unfortunately many Pit Bull owners take pride in those intimidating qualities in this breed.
I think it’s time we stop dancing around this issue and address the appropriate animal control with an ordinance ban on dangerous breeds in our beautiful city. There is no need for this type of violence to continue. I encourage you to express your concerns to our city council, if you too indeed feel like me.
