Viewfinder: Bras for a Cause

Gilda's Club annual gala at the Royal Oak Music Theatre raises funds for breast cancer research.

in Royal Oak held its annual Bras for a Cause event Saturday evening at the , spreading the word about breast cancer awareness and raising thousands of dollars for research.

Many attractions kept guests entertained throughout the night, including a musical performance by local musician Jill Jack, a live auction, art vendors and hors d'oeuvres served by local restaurants.

“It’s an opportunity for all of the men and women to come here and contribute to Gilda’s Club,” said John Fletcher, a second-year attendee. “It’s a great event. Anyone who comes here will witness an eye-opener, and it’s a great opportunity to get involved.”

Of all the evening's activities, the fashion show, hosted by actor/comedian Dave Coulier, was the talk of the night. Breast cancer survivors strutted down the catwalk modeling decorative, one-of-a-kind bras to thunderous applause from the audience.

“This is my second year being in the fashion show and it’s so much fun, I had to come back,” said Cindy Beaubien of Adrian, a two-year cancer survivor. “I drive an hour and 45 minutes to be here and it’s worth it to just hear people cheering for you.”

Gilda’s Club, named in honor of the late actress/comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer, is a community meeting place for those living with cancer and their loved ones.
