Week Ahead: City Commission Meets, Tree Lighting Ceremony and More

There's a lot going on in Royal Oak this week. Here are five things you should know as you go about your week.

There's always a lot going on in Royal Oak. Here are some highlights this week:

  1. Last week of leaf collection: Not so sexy but important, the 2013 leaf collection schedule continues in Royal Oak.  There are be six weeks of leaf collection in which the Department of Public Service (DPS) crews work to remove as many of the leaves as possible from the streets of the city. Each area of the city will be covered at least twice within the six weeks. Residents are asked to be mindful of the leaf collection schedule and to work with your neighbors to make this year a complete success.
  2. City Commission meets Monday: The City Commission meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Click here for the agenda.
  3. Woodward Ave Rapid Transit presentation on Tuesday: The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) invites the public to learn more about Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) from 6-8 p.m. at the Beaumont Hospital Administration Building, 3711 W. 13 Mile Rd. Free Parking in South Parking Deck.
  4. The Kirtland's Warbler presentation on Wednesday: William Rapai, president of Grosse Pointe Audubon Society, will begin with an account of the warbler's discovery in the mid-nineteenth century at 7:30 p.m. at the Royal Oak Middle School. His presentation goes on to examine the dramatic events that led to its precarious status, its emergence as a lightning rod for controversy, and how strong leadership, vision, commitment, sustained effort, and cooperation came together to conserve a beautiful and unusual bird.
  5. Tree lighting ceremony on Thursday: The 32nd Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony begins at 6 p.m at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. The ceremony includes caroling by Stagecrafters, music by the Royal Oak Salvation Army Band and the Royal Oak Children's Choir and a visit from Santa.
