Former Berkley Mayor George Kuhn Dies at 87

Local leaders recall Kuhn as a 'gentleman' and 'true public servant.'

George Kuhn, the former mayor of Berkley, died Monday in Highland Ranch, CO, at the age of 87.  Kuhn was a Detroit native who was elected mayor of Berkley in 1960 and served as a local leader until his retirement in 2000. Current Berkley Mayor Phil O’Dwyer commented on the loss, recognizing Kuhn for his service to the area. "The City Council and people of Berkley are saddened at the passing of former Mayor George Kuhn,” O’Dwyer said. “He was a distinguished public servant for decades and we extend our condolences to his family." Kuhn was a graduate of Central Michigan University, captain in the Navy during the Korean War and retired Ford Motor Co. executive. Robbie Ellwood, 24, Loved Sports as Fan, Player

The Special Olympics Hot Shots basketball star died Jan. 29.

Robbie Ellwood, ultimate sports fan and integral member of the Hot Shots Special Olympics basketball team, died Jan. 29 at the age of 24. Ellwood, who lived in Beverly Hills, was born Sept. 30, 1987, in Royal Oak. Ellwood was a sports fanatic. From Pistons basketball to Red Wings hockey to University of Michigan football, he was always the biggest fan. He was not only energetic in the stands, but he also was a valued team player on the field. He loved to play soccer, basketball, poly-hockey, golf, football and tennis, and was an avid bowler and swimmer. Ellwood was proud to be a part of a team. Miner's Den Co-founder Barbara E. Schowalter, 86, Remembered for Compassion and Faith

The longtime Royal Oak resident, business owner and mother of six died Jan. 25.

Barbara E. Schowalter, a longtime resident of Royal Oak and co-founder of Miner’s Den Jewelers, died Jan. 25. Schowalter was born in Detroit and graduated from Immaculata High School. She earned a degree in education and social work at Siena Heights College. She met her husband, Frank, in Detroit. After a brief courtship, they married and moved to Royal Oak in the 1940s, where they built a house and raised six children. Frank Schowalter, who died 20 years ago, owned a manufacturing business in Detroit that made parts for the automotive industry. After work, he enjoyed gem cutting as a hobby, said Tom Schowalter, the youngest of Barbara and Frank’s children. “When he filled the basement and a two-car garage with stuff, my mom asked him to …

Funeral Arrangements for Troy Student Set for Thursday

12-year-old Sean Taglione was hit by a car on a busy Coolidge Highway on Saturday.

Funeral arrangements are set for 12-year-old Sean Taglione of Troy who died early Sunday morning from injuries sustained in a traffic accident Saturday. There will be a funeral mass at noon Thursday at the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sean, a sixth-grader at Boulan Park Middle School, was struck by a Volvo on Coolidge Highway about 6 p.m. Saturday. Police say Sean's parents contacted them shortly before the accident about their missing son. Sean had autism and wandered away from home, Troy Police spokesman Andy Breidenich said Tuesday. "He wasn’t incorrigible or running away," Breidenich said. The driver, a 44-year-old Royal Oak man, is not expected to face charges, Breidenich said. Speed …

Ethel Ellison, 89, Remembered as a Witty Storyteller Who Embraced Family

Mother of six, including Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison, died Wednesday afternoon surrounded by family.

Ethel Ellison, the mother of Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison, was a storyteller. Born in Winnipeg, MA, Canada to British parents, Ellison had plenty of family history to share and enjoyed telling humorous stories about her everyday experiences. As her six children gathered around her this week, they told their own stories about Ethel Ellison. Ellison died peacefully at her family home in Royal Oak on Wednesday after battling ovarian cancer for five years. She was 89 years old. Those children described their mother as a witty, feisty woman who loved entertaining people. “She was very clever with her language and made many people laugh," said her daughter, Jacqueline Beecher, of Madison, WI. UPDATED: Kathleen Edward, 9, of Trenton—Who Had Been Taunted on Facebook—Dies

Kathleen Edward, the girl who made news all over the world after she was taunted on Facebook about two years ago, died late Wednesday night.

After a long battle with Huntington's disease, Kathleen Edward, the 9-year-old girl who was taunted on Facebook in 2010, died at about 10 p.m. Wednesday night, according to Trenton Mayor Kyle Stack. Kathleen was at her father's house in Wyandotte when she died. Kathleen was the center of a feud with neighbors, Jennifer and Scott Petkov on Detroit Street, that eventually led to Jennifer Petkov admittingly doctoring photos to depict Edward and her late mother in a skull and cross bones and embraced by the grim reaper. Laura Edward, Kathleen's mother, died as a result of Huntington's disease in 2009. Kathleen's grandmother, Rebecca Rose, said she had mixed emotions about Kathleen's death. 1 City Votes in 3 School District Elections

When Royal Oak residents go to the polls Nov. 8, they will vote for Board of Education candidates in three different areas.

In two weeks, Royal Oak residents will elect three city commissioners and a mayor as well as determine the fate of four charter amendments. Voters also will elect school board members in one of three school districts – the candidates appearing on the ballot depend on where you reside in the Royal Oak. In Precinct 1, 294 Royal Oak residents are registered to vote in the Berkley School District. Precinct 1 is the area of Royal Oak west of Woodward and north of the Detroit Zoo. School board Vice President Paul Ellison, Paul Honkala and Ronald Justice are running to fill two six-year terms. The news of the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on Wednesday sent shock waves across the Internet during the evening, as millions of people reflected on the impact that he and his products had on everyday consumers. Wally Whipple of Royal Oak Was Watchdog of City Government

Whipple, who died Sunday, was remembered and eulogized at the City Commission meeting on Monday.

Mayor Jim Ellision and other Royal Oak leaders on Monday recalled Wally Whipple as a well-known watchdog of city government from the late 1980s into the 2000s. City Commissioner Mike Andrzejak eulogized Whipple, who died on Sept. 25, for his dedication to Royal Oak, the city Andrzejak said Whipple,  “loved so much.” Whipple was 88 years old. Commissioner David Poulton, in his invocation, and former Commissioner Laura Harrison and commission candidate Bill Shaw also remembered Whipple in public comments.
