Students Flip for BMX Performance

Upton Elementary students were rewarded for meeting fundraising goals with a thrilling assembly.

Students at Upton Elementary were treated to a high energy BMX performance Friday afternoon as a reward for earning nearly $10,000 in a fundraising effort. "We worked with Great American Opportunities selling things like wrapping paper and jewelry," said Janette Catchpole, PTA President at Upton. "With the money we raised we were able to purchase things for the classrooms." The BMX assembly was a reward for students hard work. Eric "Vinny" Vasquez, Jarret Kahle, and Corey Yarbrough dazzled the students, making stunts look easy. "It's not easy at all. We have been practicing for 10 years," Vasquez told students. "We stay away from drugs and live a positive lifestyle." Vasquez reminded students to always wear a helmet when riding a bike and…

AP Exams: Students Tell Parents How They Can Help

Students say parents' encouragement and support is critical during these two weeks of exams.

Advanced Placement Program exams begin today and run for the next two weeks. If you have a student taking these exams, they likely have been studying for weeks, if not months. But it's time. And doing well on the exams can mean college credits and often factor into college admission decisions, so the stakes are high. Here are some things students around town say parents can do to help them do well this week: Pay attention to the schedule: Parents should stay informed about their students' AP schedule so they don't plan activities, family outings or dinners during the time the students should be studying, said Ashley DuBois, and Andover student who is in five AP classes and has a full schedule of tests in the next two weeks. Michigan House Budgets for School District Technology Grants

The House of Representatives is taking a proactive approach in preparing school districts for facing online assessments beginning the 2014-2015 school year.

As Royal Oak Schools and others throughout the state prepare for major changes to the way students are assessed on statewide exams, one of the issues officials are considering is how they will pay for the necessary technology needed to administer the online tests. State Rep. Bill Rogers, R-Brighton, is hoping to help. He wants to help districts pay for the technology by offering state-sponsored technology grants. The sticking point, though, is that the money - $75 million - that he's targeting is already budgeted in Gov. Rick Snyder's proposal for an incentive program that would reward districts based on how well students score on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Rogers said that plan makes little sense because of two …
