The Bears beat Lathrup 7-3 Monday to stay perfect in OAA Gold; Country Day baseball wins Royal Oak Tournament over the weekend.
* home team in all CAPS Berkley over LATHRUP, 7-3 A 7-3 win at Lathrup on Monday secured an undefeated record for the Berkley High School varsity baseball team in the Oakland Activities Association Gold division. Brad Burke gave the Bears (19-8; 12-0 OAA Gold) six solid innings on the mound. He gave up three runs on five hits and a walk. He struck out four batters. Taylor Morrissey was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. Dugan Fernandez was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Berkley travels to Birmingham Groves on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. for a nonconference game. Knights have good day at Lutheran Westland, several state-qualifying performances
Royal Oak Shrine’s track team knew it needed to get an all-around effort if the Knights were to be successful at their regional meet on Saturday. They did just that. Shrine won medals in every event, qualified 19 athletes for the state finals, and won the girls’ team title at the MHSAA Division 4 Regional meet hosted by Lutheran Westland. Shrine’s girls scored 173 ½ points to rank ahead of Lutheran Westland (141 ½) and Plymouth Christian (79). The Knight boys placed third with 102, behind the host school (146) and Detroit Loyola (136). “It was tremendous,” Coach Wright Wilson said. “Everyone was focused because they knew it could be a special day. Strong pitching helps Knights almost sweep doubleheader; Andover baseball wins on senior night over Lathrup; Seaholm baseball falls to Walled Lake Central.
* home team in all CAPS AVONDALE over Lahser 4-3 Lahser over AVONDALE, 6-2 Bloomfield Hills Lahser almost pulled off a sweep of Avondale on Friday in a doubleheader. The Knights gave up a run in the bottom half of the seventh in the first game to fall 4-3, but came back in the second game and won 6-2 behind a three-hitter by starting pitcher Neal Krentz. In Game One, Jack Schaffer hit a single to centerfield that scored Charlie Dauch from third base to put Lahser up 1-0. It was Schaffer’s first game at the varsity level for the Knights. The Yellow Jackets came back in the third inning to tie it at 1-1 and added two runs in the fifth inning. * home team in all CAPS Andover over ST. CLAIR LAKESHORE, 10-4 Andover rallied to beat St. Clair Lakeshore on the road Friday night 10-4. Lakeshore score all four of its runs in the bottom of the third. The Barons stormed back with three runs in the fourth, five in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh. Zach Wolfe struck out four batters over the first three innings. Truman Lorick pitched three scoreless innings in relieve and Gabe Berman struck out the side in the seventh. Myron Butler had two hits and two RBIs. Emerson Misch went 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Gabe Berman hit a homerun. Ravens' offensive coordinator coach takes over for Jeff Hill, who resigned to deal with his youngest daughter’s fight with leukemia
The Royal Oak High School (ROHS) athletic department has named Ryan Irish as the new Royal Oak Ravens head football coach. The position became available following the resignation of Jeff Hill in January 2012. Hill, a Royal Oak Dondero High alumnus and former Milford coach, was named the new head football coach in January 2011. He replaced Dave Potter, who was head football coach for three seasons and had an 0-27 record. A year later Hill resigned after learning his youngest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. The Royal Oak school district offered the football coach a leave of absence, but Hill decided to step down to take care of family matters, saying he didn't want to put the team behind in its quest to improve. Barons’ Tim Zobl tops West Bloomfield’s Allyson Kus in a wild week of voting.
Andover’s Tim Zobl won the Patch Athlete of the Week title for April 23-28 with over 4,000 votes after a week of unscientific polling among Patch readers in Oakland County, or 55 percent of the total votes cast (8,247). He edged out Allyson Kus from West Bloomfield, who also received strong support. The Lakers starting pitcher had 42 percent of the votes (3,541). Zobl won after he showed a tremendous amount of power last week for the Barons’ High School baseball team. In a 10-2 win over Harrison, Zobl went 3-for-3 with a home run. In Game 1 of a doubleheader against Royal Oak on Friday, he went deep again and had two RBI in a 12-5 win. He picked up where he left off with another homerun this week. * home team in all CAPS Seaholm over BERKLEY, 14-3 (Five Innings) Spencer Eick and Josh Leitman were on fire for Birmingham Seaholm on Friday, combining for seven RBI in the Maples' 14-3 five-inning mercy-rule win over Berkley. Eick finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs. Leitman was also 3-for-4 with two extra base hits and three RBI. Tommy Scheidt hit a homerun. The Bears actually had an early 3-1 after the first inning, but Seaholm came roaring back with four runs in the third and fourth.
