Memorial Seeks Photos of Royal Oak Vets Who Died in Vietnam War

Exhibit hopes to put faces with names on wall of Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial.

The 2,654 Michiganders who died for their country in the Vietnam War are remembered on the Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial. The exhibit, which was escorted by the Royal Oak Legion Riders and Royal Oak Police Department, arrived Tuesday morning on the west porch of the Royal Oak Farmers Market. "We like taking these 2,654 guys for a ride around Michigan," said Tim Ignash, of St. Clair Shores. "We don't want them to ever be forgotten." For 37 men, today was a trip home. The exhibit includes bios that tell the story of each veteran from Michigan who did not come home from Southeast Asia, including 37 men from Royal Oak. Many of the bios do not have photographs. "We are hoping to put a face to each person that lost their life in …

Henry Ford, Beaumont Merger Called Off Due to 'Two Very Different Perspectives'

Henry Ford board members voted against the multi-billion-dollar deal Tuesday afternoon.

The Beaumont and Henry Ford health systems merger has been called off after "different perspectives" emerged about the $6.4-billion deal. Henry Ford board of trustees' decision Tuesday followed six months of due diligence discussions involving hundreds of Beaumont and Henry Ford team members, according to Beaumont. “We have benefited greatly from our merger discussions and have great respect for our colleagues at Henry Ford,” said Gene Michalski, president and CEO, Beaumont Health System. “However, we found through our discussions that we are not aligned on how to achieve our vision for a model health system due to differences in our structures and business models.” In a letter to employees, Henry Ford CEO Nancy Schlichting wrote the …

I am glad they are not merging. Beaumont evolved from a great community hospital to a world-class health care facility. Henry Ford has great facilites and doctors also; but a merger of the two would prove too large and unweildy a governance structure in my opinion.   more ›

Beaumont and Henry Ford Health Systems End Merger Talks

Henry Ford ends discussions with Beaumont.

Beaumont Health System and Henry Ford Health System have ended discussions of a proposed merger to combine their operations into a new health system. “We have benefitted greatly from our merger discussions and have great respect for our colleagues at Henry Ford,” says Gene Michalski, president and CEO, Beaumont Health System. “However, we found through our discussions that we are not aligned on how to achieve our vision for a model health system due to differences in our structures and business models.” Today’s announcement followed six months of due diligence discussions involving hundreds of Beaumont and Henry Ford team members. “We are very grateful to our board members, physicians, nurses, leaders and other professionals who worked …

Would love to have been the fly on the wall, I suspect Beaumont turned out a little too top heavy in liabilities, eg only a C+ in patient safety in Royal Oak, Troy has a B. I have personal reasons not to go back to Beaumont for any emergency. They do have excellent doctors and quite a few great nurses (if you can get a hold of one). Beaumont is a prime example of what happens when accountants …   more ›

Shrine Wins Regional Track Championship

Knights sending 19 on to state finals.

The Shrine Knights are on the fast track toward the state finals. Nineteen Shrine athletes advanced to the upcoming championship meet by finishing first or second in their events last weekend at Webberville, where the girls won the regional team title and the boys finished third. “Our main focus every season is to do well at regionals,” Head Coach Wright Wilson said. “If you have a good regional meet, you have a good season. The girls accomplished their top goal of the year and getting so many qualifiers for the state meet is a big deal.” Shrine’s girls accumulated 151½ points to lead the 14-team field, finishing 27 ahead of runner-up Morrice. Auburn Hills Oakland Christian (92), Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest (67) and Birmingham …

Royal Oak to Explore Options to Fill Surprise Vacancy

The Royal Oak City Charter does not describe an exact process for filling Mayor Pro-Tem Patricia Capello's seat after she resigned Monday night.

The Royal Oak City Commission will decide how to fill an unplanned vacancy following the surprise resignation of Mayor Pro-Tem Patricia Capello. Capello is relocating to Texas and tendered her resignation at Monday's city commission meeting. She has approximately six months left on her term. The city charter provides a vacancy be filled by appointment of a majority vote of the remaining members of the commission, but it doesn't describe the exact process or specify a time frame, according to City Attorney Dave Gillam. "The commission can decide on a long drawn out process or have a discussion at a public meeting and make an appointment," Gillam said.  Another more formal option would be to ask for letters of interest and conduct interviews…

I do not understand the rush to hire another wasted outside attorney opinion. Someone has friends I guess. Any investigation at this point is an exercise in futility if the defendant is not available to defend herself. And in any case she does not have to respond as this is not a formal court. More money thrown to the wind. This matter is for a real court to decide and even if protocol was …   more ›
