Youth Soccer, Football Games Spark Fond Memories

Watching kids play in community sports leagues brings nostalgia about the autumn days of youth in Royal Oak.

One of the things I miss most about my kids' growing up years are those hectic autumn weekend days where we went from soccer game to dance class to football games, one after another. When I’m driving around Royal Oak and see those tiny little kids playing soccer or little league football, I get nostalgic. On a recent weekend, with my column a perfect excuse, I headed out to find a bit of those golden days and attend a couple of games. Worden Park’s soccer fields were my first destination. I parked and meandered over to the sidelines and what I saw wasn’t much different than when my kids were playing 20 years ago. Celebrate Your Inner Goddess by 'Girlavanting' With Friends

We show you how to have a great girls-only day in Royal Oak.

When I was growing up in the 1960s and '70s my mother would use the word "gallivanting" all the time. Her idiom for "painting the town" seems a little old-fashioned these days, but authors Teri Williams of Pleasant Ridge and Tamara Stone, a Royal Oak native who now lives in Ferndale, are bringing back the expression with a hip and playful spin. The pair penned a girls' guide to balance, bliss and fun called "Girlavanting." I caught up with Williams at the cozy cafe What Crepe? on Washington Avenue for a lesson in Girlavanting.
