Lockhart's BBQ: Smoky Meats and Sweet Treats

Lockhart's may be Royal Oak's newest restaurant, but it is quickly becoming a destination. From house smoked meats to made-from-scratch sides to the extensive Michigan beer list, Lockhart's is doing the right things to keep people coming back.

Lockhart's BBQ opened a few months ago at 202 E. Third St., and set a new standard for local barbecue restaurants. Even though Lockhart's is one of the new kids in Detroit's burgeoning barbecue scene, it has quickly become one of the principal players in the game. First and foremost, before they opened, Lockhart's hired pitmaster Steve Coddington. Coddington makes sure that when you walk into Lockhart's, a smoky aroma punches you in the face.  The smoker is smack dab in the middle of the restaurant, so not only is the aroma inescapable, you are privy to watch all of the meats as they are moved to and from said smoker.  If you see a cook slicing some brisket or shredding pulled pork, ask for a taste and they will oblige.
