They had to turn people back that followed their noses to Baconfest Michigan on Saturday, as 1,200 ticket holders filled the sold-out event at the Royal Oak Farmers Market and an adjacent tent in the east parking lot. "When we got here, the line was wrapped around the building to get in," said Mayor Jim Ellison, who attended Baconfest with wife Jodie. Nearly 40 vendors passed out samples of everything from bacon-banana cupcakes with bacon-chocolate buttercream to sweet corn and bacon bisque soup to bacon jam on crostinis and crackers to bacon stuffed squash. One-Eyed Betty's, of Ferndale was serving bacon-wrapped pork belly. "We are doing really well tonight," said Claire McCaflury, of One-Eyed …

Weekend Planner: 'Masks,' Recycling Event, Paint Party and More

A roundup of weekend happenings in Royal Oak.

Tickets are $5, and are available by pre-ordering by phone 248-541-6606 or by purchasing at the door. The Royal Oak Missionary Church is located at 411 E. 11 Mile Rd. A quick question for the Downtown Development Authority: Why is it whenever developers come to Royal Oak you give them taxpayer $$$...and how long do you expect residents to underwrite public safety costs for the downtown? The DDA handed over $300 K to the millionaire owner of Emagine. I wonder how many hundred K they’ll end up throwing at the Hotel developer. The DDA only pays for 3 police …   more ›

Entreprenuer Brings Home the Bacon

Producer Matt Peach has an idea that sizzles: Baconfest Michigan 2012.

Bacon lip balm? Bacon hand sanitizer? Bacon ice cream? “Bacon is a cultural movement,” said Matt Peach of Livonia, the producer of Baconfest Michigan 2012. “It’s one of two food cults. The other one is Nutella" chocolate hazelnut spread. Peach said he developed a yearning for a festival of pork strips about a year and a half ago and started looking for one online. “I thought someone else is going to eventually do this. Peach, an entrepreneur and film producer, has never produced an event. He says his bacon festival will not be like going to a five-star restaurant, but it’ll be …
