A man suspected of robbing banks in Royal Oak, Birmingham and Berkley was arrested Wednesday during an attempted bank robbery at TCF Bank on 12 Mile Road.
Royal Oak Police confirmed the arrest of a man on Wednesday who is suspected in a string of bank robberies in Oakland County over the past several months. The arrest came during an attempted robbery at TCF Bank at approximately 12:41 p.m. in Royal Oak, which had been robbed twice in March 2012 by a man wearing a mask. Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue said he believes the man in custody is the "serial bank robber." Around 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report from an employee at TCF Bank who said a man walked into the bank armed with a handgun and demanded money from the teller. A man believed to be responsible for several bank robberies around Oakland County, including one in Birmingham, robbed the Independent Bank at 14 Mile and Southfield Tuesday.
Police believe that a serial bank robber hitting up banks around Oakland County may be responsible for the Tuesday morning robbery of a Beverly Hills bank just south of the Birmingham border. According to WXYZ, a man robbed the Independent Bank in Beverly Hills — located just south of 14 Mile on Southfield — on Tuesday. In security footage caught at the Beverly Hills bank, the man is seen holding a gun while the teller hands over the cash in a bag, according to Click On Detroit. During the robbery, the man was wearing a black coat, pants and ski mask. On Tuesday, police said the man was also wearing a shirt and tie under his coat. A man who robbed a Main Street bank on Feb. 22 is believed to be a suspect in five other area robberies.
A Royal Oak bank is the latest target of a "serial bank robber," according to Federal Bureau of Investigations officials. On Feb. 22, a man entered the Citizen’s Bank at 800 S. Main St. with a handgun and got away with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect matches the description of a masked man believed to have robbed several banks in the area, according to FBI spokesperson Simon Shaykhet. Since December, five other banks in Oakland County, including two on Main Street in Royal Oak, have been robbed. The other robberies occurred in Madison Heights, Berkley and Birmingham. Birmingham Police say Friday's robbery of Comerica Bank is similar to several others recently in Oakland County; the Federal Bureau of Investigations has offered a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
Birmingham Police believe there may be a connection between Friday's robbery of the Comerica Bank on West Maple and several similar robberies in the area, including two in Royal Oak. On Friday, a masked man wearing all black robbed the Comerica Bank at 1712 W. Maple Road, police reports state. The man pulled out a gun during the robbery, police say, and walked out with more than $9,000. According to Birmingham Lt. Mike Albrect, the detective in charge of the case, Birmingham Police is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations to catch the man. The Federal Bureau of Investigations has offered a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of a serial bank robber in Oakland County. The man is a suspect in the Jan. 28 armed robbery of the Charter One bank on Woodward Avenue in Berkley. The FBI said the man also is a suspect the following nearby robberies. The Royal Oak Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying a man who robbed a Main Street bank on Jan. 15.
Royal Oak police released a photo of a suspect who robbed the Charter One Bank at 200 S. Main St. earlier this week. On Tuesday, the man in the photo entered the bank, armed with a handgun and demanded money from the teller, according to a police statement. He fled on foot after receiving the cash. The suspect is described as a male, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches. He was wearing a black winter hat, black ski mask, a black winter jacket, tight fitting stretch pants and athletic shoes. The suspect in a robbery last week at Chase Bank in Huntington Woods was arraigned Wednesday. The man is being held in the Oakland County Jail without bond, Huntington Woods Public Safety Director Steve Fairman said. John Jones of Royal Oak Township was charged in 45th District Court in Oak Park via video arraignment from the jail, The Daily Tribune reported. Judge David Gubow ordered Jones jailed without bond, according to the report. The 911 caller who tipped off the Huntington Woods Public Safety Department to a robbery Monday at Chase Bank followed his instincts after he saw a suspicious-looking man enter the building, an official said. The tipster, a Huntington Woods resident, was in the bank parking lot when he noticed a man wearing a knit cap and white gloves go into the building, Lt. Ron Livingston said Tuesday.
