Royal Oak's Best Burgers: O'Toole's and Oak City Grille

Our third installment of the 'best burger' series focuses on bar burgers, the kind of simple burgers that should be enjoyed with a pint. O'Toole's and Oak City Grille both make fantastic versions.

Most bars serve a burger. The combination of a burger and beer is, as we mentioned in the Royal Oak Brewery article, perfection. However, a true bar burger isn't all gussied up with toppings. Beef, cheese, bun, sometimes bacon, and basic veggies (lettuce, tomato, onion) are all that are required.    O'Toole's burger is simply called "the burger," a half pound of beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.  The folks at O'Toole's are proud of their burger and they should be. It is a juicy, messy burger.  Messiness is a good thing. The combination of the melted American cheese with the juices from burger are a wonderful thing.  The house fried potato chips are a nice touch, too, a change of pace from regular fries. Best Burger in Michigan: Red Coat Tavern. Order it medium rare with lettuce, tomato and the special Red Coat Sauce (Mayo and Onion?) and an order of their superb Onion Rings.   more ›
