Friday Highlights: Ferndale, St. Mary’s and Lahser Win District Titles

Ferndale boys basketball team beats city rival; Lahser eliminates Groves; St. Mary’s survives in overtime; Clawson falls to Country Day.

* home team in caps unless otherwise noted Detroit Country Day over Clawson 66-37 (Class B; Warren Lincoln District) Country Day overwhelmed Clawson (20-3) in the Class B district final at Warren Lincoln on Friday night. “We would have had to play our absolute best game to be in it,” Trojans coach Bill Shellenbarger said. “They’re big, they’re long. They get to the basket and play really good defense. They were just the better team.” The Yellowjackets went up early 8-2 and maintained a double-digit lead for most of the first half. Map to the Division Title: Here Come Basketball Playoffs

Lahser, Rochester and Ferndale are among the top boys teams in the Oakland Activities Association with three weeks left in the regular season.

Basketball season is heading into the home stretch and with three weeks left until the playoffs, it's time to take a look at where the division races in the Oakland Activities Association stand, starting with the boys. 2011 Champion: N/A It looks like a two-team race in the OAA Gold division, as Bloomfield Hills Lahser and Oxford sit tied atop the division with identical 5-1 records. Both schools have four division games left to play, including a matchup against each other on Feb. 23. The Wildcats won the first meeting between the schools 49-42 on Jan. 26 at their gym. Lahser struggled in the first half of that game, only scoring four points in the second quarter. “We came out very lethargic,” Lahser coach Duane Graves said after the game…

UPDATED - Clawson and Ferndale scores from Tuesday added. * home team in CAPS Lahser over ANDOVER 73-58 The Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School boys basketball team is going for gold.  A 73-58 win over rival Andover (7-9; 1-5 Gold) on the road Friday night kept the Knights atop the Oakland Activities Association Gold division with four games to play. Without starting point guard Armand Cartwright for the rest of the season, Lahser (12-4; 5-1 Gold) is trying to keep pace with Groves and Oxford. The three teams went into Friday all tied with 4-1 records in the division. Knights sophomore guard Martez Jones had a game-high 20 points. The Falcons edge out Royal Oak on the road; the Knights win in ugly game over Hazel Park; the Eagles stay perfect in Oakland Activities Association White.

* home team in CAPS Groves over ROYAL OAK 40-37 Birmingham Groves coach Scott Sheckell had a simple question after his team’s game at Royal Oak on Friday night. “Do you know CPR?” he asked, smiling. The Falcons needed some clutch free throws in the final minute to hold on to their three-point lead and escape with a 40-37 win over the Ravens in an Oakland Activities Association Gold division matchup. Royal Oak had two chances to tie game in the final 20 seconds, but both fell short. With 9.5 seconds left, Joel Gorbold turned the ball over trying to hit Martel Porter cutting to the basket. Gorbold threw the ball too high and it went sailing out of bounds. On the Ravens' final possession, Gorbold missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.  It was a …
