Royal Oak pub-restaurant offers a special through July 22, pairing gourmet burgers with award-winning beers.
Bastone Brewery, 419 S. Main St., 248-544-6250 Bastone Brewery is that comfortable pub spot sandwiched between a wine bar and Cuban eatery at the corner of Fifth and Main streets in downtown Royal Oak. Its roots are in Belgium, so that’s where the menu starts. Belgian-style favorites include seafood waterzooi, steamed mussels, a Belgian waffle topped with chicken, vegetables and a sour cream and white wine sauce, and pomme frites served in a paper-lined mug. It moves on to fresh soups, interesting salads and a good variety of entrees, sandwiches and thin crust pizzas. Through July 22, Bastone is putting the spotlight on a lineup of gourmet burgers and beers selected to pair with them. Bastone says its beers are hand-crafted on site with …

We've come to the end of our burgerfest. Bar burgers, sliders, burgers with fancy toppings – we've done our due diligence. If we forgot anyone, we apologize. Let us know in the comments and we'll sample other burgers in the future. We must now proclaim the winner of downtown Royal Oak's best burger. Without further ado, we present the buffalo burger from Town Tavern. Simultaneously high end and rustic, this burger is lesson in perfect construction. Start with ground buffalo, beef's leaner cousin. Do to its lean nature, we recommend ordering the burger medium to medium rare to ensure proper juiciness. Then, top with aged white cheddar, arugula, caramelized onion and dijon mustard for a flavor combination unmatched by any other burger …

Sometimes the best burgers are able to be modified in interesting ways. Bastone's burger is simple on the surface: high quality ground sirloin on a bun. However, Bastone – the Belgian-inspired downtown Royal Oak restaurant and brewery – doesn't want you to stop there. On our visit, the manager put together his favorite combination of flavors: grilled red onions, avocado, kalamata olives and bleu cheese. There's at least a dozen other toppings and cheese choices to contemplate. All of the toppings in the world wouldn't matter if the burger isn't tasty. Bastone's burger delivers on all fronts. Order your burger medium rare to medium because sirloin is lean so it tends to dry out. If you top your medium rare burger with the toppings we …

Our third installment of the 'best burger' series focuses on bar burgers, the kind of simple burgers that should be enjoyed with a pint. O'Toole's and Oak City Grille both make fantastic versions.

Most bars serve a burger. The combination of a burger and beer is, as we mentioned in the Royal Oak Brewery article, perfection. However, a true bar burger isn't all gussied up with toppings. Beef, cheese, bun, sometimes bacon, and basic veggies (lettuce, tomato, onion) are all that are required. O'Toole's burger is simply called "the burger," a half pound of beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. The folks at O'Toole's are proud of their burger and they should be. It is a juicy, messy burger. Messiness is a good thing. The combination of the melted American cheese with the juices from burger are a wonderful thing. The house fried potato chips are a nice touch, too, a change of pace from regular fries. Oak City Grille…
