Fresard Clock Tower on City Commission Agenda Tonight

Royal Oak officials will tackle a short agenda when they meet at 7:30 p.m. today at City Hall.

The Fresard Clock Tower is back on the Royal Oak City Commission's agenda when it meets today at 7:30 p.m. on the third floor of City Hall. After much discussion on June 18, Royal Oak city commissioners agreed to table the decision to support Suburban Collection efforts to reinstate permits for the Jim Fresard Clock Tower on Woodward. The Troy-based car dealership business is interested in purchasing and operating the 44-foot tall clock tower for advertising. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) determined the electronic display boards on the clock tower were abandoned signage and subject to removal. In a memo to the commissioners, City Attorney Dave Gillam advised MDOT is only interested in removing the display boards and not …

City Commission Supports Revoking Travelodge License and More

Royal Oak officials also discuss a parking issue and OK a new sidewalk cafe during Monday night's City Commission meeting.

The Royal Oak City Commission handled a list of items on its agenda at Monday night’s regular meeting at City Hall, including the following: Commissioners voted to revoke the license for the Travelodge Motel (also known as the Sagamore) at 30776 Woodward Ave. on Monday night after the business failed to update city officials on delinquent property taxes and water bills by the deadline set in a City Commission agreement. City Attorney Dave Gillam told commissioners he learned the property was sold, outstanding property taxes were paid in full last week and a check is in the mail for the delinquent water bills. “However, at this point we are still left in the dark as to what the status of the property is and who the operator actually is,” …

City Commission Tackles Busy Agenda Tonight

The Royal Oak City Commission meets Monday to discuss sidewalks, police officer vacancies, special event permits and more.

At their 7:30 p.m. regular meeting at City Hall, city officials are expected to discuss a variety of matters. The City Commission will review a six-year citywide sidewalk program slated to begin this spring. The estimated construction cost for the pavement replacement plan is $1.8 million. The 2012 target area covers Farnum Avenue to 13 Mile Road west of Main Street (see attached map). Deficient sidewalks were recorded on 73 percent of the 4,300 properties surveyed in the target area. Property owners will have to pay a special assessment for replacement and installation of sidewalks adjacent to their properties. The Royal Oak Police Department will ask commissioners to approve recalling a laid-off officer and hiring a second officer after …

1. The City Commission meets Monday: The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Click here for the agenda. 2. Kindergarten Welcome Nights are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday: Royal Oak Schools will host Kindergarten Welcome Nights at each of the district’s six elementary schools through Dec. 14. Welcome Nights provide a time for parents of incoming kindergarten students to visit the school and meet the kindergarten teacher. Parents are encouraged to attend and see the building, staff and curriculum that their child will experience.
