The Royal Oak City Commission meets Monday to discuss Human Rights Ordinance, Suicide Prevention Task Force and more.
At their 7:30 p.m. regular meeting at City Hall, city officials are expected to discuss a variety of matters. City officials will provide an update regarding Wednesday's explosion at 4232 Cooper Avenue, which took the life of Daniel Malczynski, 58, and forced several other individuals to evacuate their homes. After humble farewells, the new City Commission gets to work.
The Royal Oak City Commission said goodbye to three outgoing members and welcomed three new ones during a Monday night meeting that was filled with thank you's and well wishes. Before the changing of the guard occurred, many people stepped forward to praise the service of commissioners Chuck Semchena and Terry Drinkwine and Mayor Pro-Tem Michael Andrzejak. Royal Oak resident Nancy Barnett, who spoke during Monday's public comment, said the three men would be truly missed. “I know you tried to do your best,” Barnett said. Of Drinkwine, she said, “Terry you are honest. City office hopefuls tackled issues on voters' minds during the League of Women Voters forum Wednesday evening.
Residents who filled the Royal Oak City Commission Chambers on Wednesday evening got the opportunity to meet seven City Commission candidates during a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters in preparation for the Nov. 8 election. The forum, led by moderator Judy Bateman, gave candidates Kyle DuBuc, Mike Fournier, George Gomez, Peggy Goodwin, Rick Karlowski, Bill Shaw and Scott Warheit the opportunity to answer questions about the downtown retail/restaurant mix, the decision to deny Kroger a permit to build a downtown store, the non-motorized plan to make it easier for bicyclists and pedestrians to get around in the community, combining/outsourcing city services and taxes, among other things. I watched the forum, and it was disappointing. It seems that the hard questions were filtered out by the moderators, and too much time was spent discussing relatively trivial matters. There's a disturbing amount of apathy and lack of interest for this election, which is bad considering we'll have three new commissioners who will help set policy for the next four years.
