Wind Advisory Issued for Southeast Michigan, Power Outages Possible

A spokesman for DTE Energy said they haven't seen any major outages thus far, but are staying prepared.

As high winds pick up in southeast Michigan due to the reach of Hurricane Sandy, so will the likelihood for power outages and other wind-related issues. The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory Monday morning for all of southern Michigan, including Midland, Bay, Lenawee, Saginaw, Tuscola, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, and could cause hazardous situations—including power outages, downed tree branches, and difficulty driving, especially on east-west roads. DTE Energy spokesman John Austerberry said that the Michigan-based gas and electric company has not seen any …

DTE Updates Berkley on Royal Oak Substation Fire

Representatives explain what caused the July 17 substation fire in Royal Oak that impacted approximately 10,000 customers and say repairs are ongoing and credits are coming for consumers who have yet to receive them.

DTE Energy representatives told the Berkley City Council recently that a substation fire that impacted approximately 10,000 customers in Berkley and Royal Oak this summer was, more or less, an aberration. Regional manager Mike Palchesko and supervising engineer Ron Gerkin said Oct. 15 that DTE's electrical system is not overloaded and required maintenance was performed on the substation that was built in 1952 and serves the northeast corner of Berkley before the incident. The catastrophic Webster substation fire on July 17 in Royal Oak and the outages that followed were due to an unusual set of circumstances, the DTE representatives said. "Webster Substation was in a normal operating state prior to the incident on 7/17/2012," according to …

DTE Offers Credits to Berkley, Royal Oak Customers

Approximately 8,000 consumers impacted by outages following a July 17 substation fire will receive $25 to $250 off their bills, spokesman Alejandro Bodipo-Memba said.

DTE Energy will give approximately 8,000 customers credits on their bills following a July 17 substation fire that knocked out power to 10,000 customers in Berkley and Royal Oak during record-setting heat. The credits will be for $25 to $250, depending on the length of the customer's outage, said DTE spokesman Alejandro Bodipo-Memba, who added all eligible customers have been contacted via a recorded phone message. Anyone with questions can call 313-235-4141, he said. The July 17 equipment failure in Royal Oak that caused the fire was so intense it blew out a window and a door several feet away in the substation, Royal Oak Fire Marshall Fire Marshal Tom Nikkila said. "It was a high-heat fire," he said. "It was quite an event. "I am not an …

I am little more concerned of increases in loss of power over the past few years. I, like many have a freezer and quite honestly, $250.00 would not cover my loss. My concern grows with increased number of garage and house fires along with some blocks south of Catalpa that actually had wires melt. I fear infrastructure is giving away which could lead to larger outages with higher risks related to …   more ›

National Weather Service Declares Hazardous Weather Outlook

Strong thunderstorms that could bring wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, hail up to 1 inch in diameter and localized flooding are possible Thursday afternoon and evening in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

The National Weather Service has declared a hazardous weather outlook Thursday for portions of southeast Michigan, including Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. The agency predicts a high of 85 degrees with an 80 percent chance of precipitation Thursday; thunderstorms are expected during the afternoon, into the evening and overnight. "These storms may become severe during the afternoon and evening," according to the forecasting agency. "The biggest threat from these storms will be damaging wind gusts to 60 mph and hail to one inch in diameter. "In addition, very heavy rainfall may accompany these storms, which could lead to localized flooding," the NWS said. "... The thunderstorms will be triggered by a strong cold front sweeping across …

DTE Investigates Cause of Equipment Failure

Hundreds of customers were without service Thursday morning in Berkley, as were dozens in Royal Oak, according to the utility's outage map.

An equipment failure Wednesday night caused power outages in Berkley and Royal Oak and DTE is investigating the cause today, a spokesman said. The initial outage occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., spokesman Alejandro Bodipo-Memba said Thursday, and most customers were back online early this morning after a crew was dispatched to fix the problem. However, DTE's outage map showed that as of 10:30 a.m., 652 customers were without power in Berkley, as were 80 in Royal Oak. Bodipo-Memba said another crew was on the scene working to address the issue Thursday morning. He added that out of DTE's 2.1 million customers in southeast Michigan, fewer than 1,000 were without power, "which is very typical." "We don't have any concerns with regard to …

DTE doesn't have any concerns about another eqjipment failure. Ido! Heck DTE is not without power. You would think after the substation fire DTE would have inspected that entire circuit. Oh boy here comes a long remainder of summer and winfer. It usually takes DTE 6 months to fix anything   more ›

DTE: Temporary Equipment Will Be in Place for Weeks

Royal Oak and Berkley will have to live with portable generators and transformers until permanent repairs are made following a Tuesday night substation fire, the utility says.

Royal Oak and Berkley residents will see a lot of activity by DTE crews as the utility works to make permanent repairs after a substation fire earlier this week knocked out power to 10,000 customers in the cities, DTE spokesman John Austerberry said Friday. Temporary measures to keep the cities powered up include three generators and four portable transformers dotted around Berkley and Royal Oak, as well as a large portable substation on Webster Road in front of the Royal Oak substation that caught fire Tuesday. "The equipment will need to remain in place for a couple of weeks," Austerberry said. "When permanent repairs are made, we'll remove that equipment." He said DTE does not have a cost estimate at this time for the fire damage. "We …

Power Outages: Q&A with DTE Rep

DTE representative Scott Simons discusses the recent outages and explains how restoration is prioritized.

More than 6,000 DTE Energy customers in Royal Oak were without power at one point last week after severe thunderstorms hit the area July 4. Tuesday morning, the number of customers in the city still without power is down to 175. The storms affected more than 300,000 customers in southeast Michigan and caused more than 1,000 downed power lines. Service has now been restored to more than 98 percent of those who lost power. Here's what DTE spokesman Scott Simons had to say about the recent power outage in an interview with Patch on Monday afternoon. How do you feel the restoration process has gone overall? Simons: We had a lot of challenges with this restoration. We had four separate storms that had us readjusting our priorities. Since the …

UPDATE: Outage Snarls Woodward Commute; Hundreds in Huntington Woods Lose Power

"I did not enjoy driving in it on Monday of Fourth of July week," says commuter who got stuck in the traffic jam, which began at Lincoln and stretched north to 13 Mile Road, affecting Huntington Woods, Royal Oak and Berkley.

An outage late Monday afternoon knocked out traffic signals along Woodward Avenue, snarling the rush hour commute and leaving some residents in Huntington Woods and Royal Oak without power. Royal Oak Police said the outage was caused by a transformer problem. There was an explosion at approximately 5 p.m. behind the BP gas station at the corner of Woodward and Lincoln in Royal Oak, Huntington Woods Public Safety Lt. Billy Spencer confirmed. The explosion sparked an outage that affected traffic signals along Woodward from Lincoln north to 13 Mile Road – affecting motorists in Huntington Woods, Royal Oak and Berkley – he said. Officers from Huntington Woods, as well as the Berkley Public Safety and Royal Oak Police Departments responded to …
